Hanoi on a budget: real prices and money-saving tips
Hanoi is one of Asia's cheapest big cities, but the gap between local rates and tourist rates is wide. Here are the real 2026 prices for rooms, food, transport and sights, the daily budget bands that actually hold, and the tactics that quietly cut the bill.
What a day in Hanoi really costs
Three daily bands hold honestly. A backpacker sharing dorms and eating street food runs $20-28 a day: a $6-8 dorm bed, $8-10 across three street meals, $3-4 in Grab bikes, and a couple of dollars for a temple ticket and a bia hoi. A mid-range solo traveller in a private $15-20 room lands at $40-55. A comfort trip in a $60-80 boutique with a sit-down dinner and a rooftop drink is $90-120. Couples do not double the total — the room is shared, so two people travel for roughly 1.6 times one, not two. Fix your band before you book anything, because it decides your neighbourhood and your tours.
The single biggest lever is the room, not the coffee. Cutting $1 coffees saves nothing against a $30 hotel gap. Where the money actually leaks is airport transfers, booked day tours, and drinks in Western bars — a beer at a Tay Ho cocktail bar is $6 against $0.40 for bia hoi on Ta Hien. Travellers who blow their band almost always do it on a $50 Ha Long day tour or a $20 airport taxi, never on noodles. Decide those three big-ticket items first — where you sleep, how you get from Noi Bai, and how you book excursions — and the day-to-day spend looks after itself.
Where to sleep, and the neighbourhood that saves money
Room bands are clear. Dorm beds in the Old Quarter hostels around Ngo Huyen run $5-8; a private room in a well-run guesthouse $12-20; a 3-star boutique with breakfast $35-55; a 4-star $60-80. The Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem) costs a few dollars more per night but you walk to almost everything, saving $4-6 a day in Grab fares, so it is usually the cheaper choice once you add transport. Rooms are cheaper out in Cau Giay or Ha Dong, 6-8km from the centre, but every trip in is a 20-30 minute car ride that eats the saving. Base central and walk; that one decision does more than any coupon.
Booking timing matters as much as location. Reserve 2-3 weeks ahead for October-November and March-April, when good budget rooms in the $20-40 band sell out; in the June-August heat you can walk in and negotiate a lower rate. For stays over four nights a serviced aparthotel in Tay Ho — Vnahomes and Granda sit around $23-31 — beats a nightly hotel: the kitchen kills delivery costs and they change linen weekly rather than daily. Skip anything marketed as 'near the airport'. Noi Bai is 27km out, and a room there only guarantees two long, paid taxi runs instead of one arrival transfer.
Eat for a few dollars, and where not to
Street food is the cheapest great eating in the city and the prices barely move. Pho at Pho Gia Truyen on Bat Dan is $2.50; bun cha, grilled pork with noodles, at Dac Kim or the Obama-Bourdain spot Huong Lien is $3.50-4; a banh mi at Banh Mi 25 is $1; bun bo nam bo $3; a plate of xoi sticky rice under $2. Egg coffee at Cafe Giang, invented on this street in 1946 when milk was scarce, is $1.20. Three full meals plus two coffees rarely tops $10 a day if you eat where the low plastic stools are and locals are already sitting.
Skip the sit-down places with English-only menus and laminated photos on the tourist fringe around Hoan Kiem and St Joseph's Cathedral — they charge triple for worse pho. Two habits protect the budget: eat at the local hour, since pho is a breakfast dish that sells out by 10am at the good stalls, and confirm the price before you sit at any stall with no menu, because a few near the cathedral quote a 'tourist price'. For drinks, the fresh draught bia hoi poured on the Ta Hien corner is $0.40 a glass — reckoned the cheapest beer in the world — so there is no way to overpay for it.
Getting around without wasting money
Install the Grab app before you land and default to the bike, not the car: a GrabBike across the centre is $1-2, a GrabCar $3-5 for the same trip, and the bike slips through traffic the car sits in. Never flag a metered taxi on the street in the Old Quarter — a handful run rigged meters that spin fast. Walking is free and the 36 guild streets are tight enough that most sights sit within a 15-20 minute walk of Hoan Kiem Lake, so you can go a full day without paying for transport at all. The city bus is about $0.35 but slow and awkward without some Vietnamese.
From Noi Bai, 27km and 40-50 minutes out, rank the airport options by value. The public bus 86 runs to the Old Quarter for 45,000 VND (about $1.80) every 20-25 minutes until roughly 9pm and is the runaway winner if you land in daylight and travel light. A Grab car is $12-15, the official airport taxi $17-20, and a hotel car $20-25. Ignore the freelance drivers inside arrivals who quote a flat $30 — walk to the marked taxi rank or order a Grab from the app's designated pickup point outside the terminal, where the fare is fixed before you get in.
Sights, SIM and money — the small costs that add up
Hanoi's headline sights are close to free. The Temple of Literature is $1.30, the Thang Long Imperial Citadel $1.30, Hoa Lo Prison $2, Ngoc Son Temple on Hoan Kiem $1.30, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum free, though the queue is long. The water puppet show at the Thang Long Theatre is $4-6. The best things cost nothing: the Sunday walking-street loop around Hoan Kiem, the weekend night market running Hang Dao to Dong Xuan on Friday-to-Sunday evenings, and the train-street cafes in Ba Dinh where you pay only for a $1 coffee to sit trackside. Budget $8-10 for a full day of paid entries.
Two admin costs quietly add up. A Viettel tourist SIM with 30 days of data is $5-8 from the airport counter or any phone shop, and an eSIM costs about the same; buy either rather than roaming. For cash, use a Vietcombank or BIDV ATM and withdraw the 3-5 million VND maximum in one go — most banks charge a flat 44,000-55,000 VND (around $2) per withdrawal whatever the amount, so one big pull beats four small ones. Book day trips through your guesthouse, not the Old Quarter tout agencies: the same Ninh Binh day tour is $25-30 arranged direct versus $45-55 once a middleman adds a markup.
When to come to pay less
Room rates track the weather closely. The peak is October-November and March-April, when the air is dry and mild at 22-28C and a room that costs $30 in September runs $45 in October. The cheapest stretch is the June-August summer, when highs hit 33-38C with heavy humidity and hotels discount 20-30% to fill rooms — workable if you schedule indoor sights and long lunches for the midday heat. December-February is cool at 15-18C and quiet, good value except around Tet. The shoulder weeks in early May and late September split the difference: usable weather at off-peak rates, and the easiest walk-in bargaining.
Avoid Tet, the Lunar New Year, if you are watching the budget. In 2026 it falls on 17 February, and for the week either side family-run guesthouses close, street stalls shut, and the hotels that stay open push rates up. It is a remarkable time to witness the city but a hard time to eat and sleep cheaply. Book budget rooms 2-3 weeks ahead for the autumn and spring peaks; in the summer low season you can arrive and negotiate a walk-in rate on the spot. Flights into Noi Bai are usually cheapest midweek, Tuesday to Thursday, and across the summer trough.
