Longer excursions
6) Bat Trang pottery village, 45 minutes by taxi east, $3 to make your own bowl on a wheel, then $2 to paint it. Best half-day trip with kids. 7) Trang An sampan through caves in Ninh Binh — full day, $10 boat, and the caves are low-ceilinged which children love. 8) Hoa Lo Prison — surprisingly, 8+ kids get engaged with the escape story of Vietnamese revolutionaries fleeing through the sewer in 1945. Skip the war-era sections; they’re heavy.
What underwhelms
Temple of Literature bores kids under 12 — 20 minutes max. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum's queue and silence rule kills any family visit. And Old Quarter street food tours are exhausting for small children — do one or two stops on your own timing instead. Bring earplugs for traffic noise, and a stroller only for the wider French Quarter avenues; the Old Quarter's uneven pavements defeat wheels.
