The two ways to get there
1) Overnight sleeper train Hanoi to Lao Cai: 8 hrs, $35-70 per bunk depending on class (Chapa Express, Victoria, Livitrans), then 1-hr shuttle up to Sapa town, $3. Departs 10pm, arrives 6am. Romantic in theory, cramped in practice — pick soft sleeper 4-berth, not hard sleeper. 2) Limousine van from My Dinh station: 5.5 hrs direct to Sapa town, $18-25, departs 7am and 10pm. Faster, cheaper, less atmospheric. For most travellers, the van wins.
What to actually do in Sapa
Skip Sapa town itself — it's over-developed and cold. Base 30 minutes out in Ta Van or Lao Chai villages ($15-40 homestay with H’mong or Dzao families). Trek 12-18 km through terraced rice fields with a village guide ($15-20/day) — early September for green, mid-September for gold. Cat Cat village is the tourist trap, skip. Fansipan cable car ($30) to Vietnam's highest peak is worth it on a clear day but check forecasts — fog kills the view 60% of the time.
When to go, when not
Best months: March-May (spring flowers), September-October (harvest gold). Avoid: June-August (leech-heavy, muddy trails), December-February (foggy, below 5°C, terraces bare). If your Hanoi trip is only 5 days, don’t do Sapa — the transit eats 2 days and you don’t have time to earn the trek. If you have 8+ days, Sapa is one of Southeast Asia's great mountain experiences. For historical travellers: the French built Sapa in 1922 as a hill station; the old Catholic church and the villa foundations remain.
