1) Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Nguyen Van Huyen, $2) — the best museum in Vietnam, full stop. Outdoor stilt-house village plus deep exhibits on all 54 ethnic groups. Allow 3 hours. 2) Vietnam National Museum of History (Trang Tien) — housed in a 1932 Ernest Hébrard building, itself worth the $1.50. 3) Ho Chi Minh Museum on Ba Dinh Square, brutalist and strange, $1. 4) Vietnamese Women's Museum on Ly Thuong Kiet — small, sharp, wartime oral histories done right.
The next six
5) Hoa Lo Prison ("Hanoi Hilton"), $1.50 — colonial-era guillotine still in place; heavy but essential. 6) Vietnam Military History Museum (moved to the new Nam Tu Liem site in late 2024), free through 2026, huge. 7) Fine Arts Museum, Nguyen Thai Hoc, $1.50, great lacquer collection. 8) Temple of Literature, $1.50 — technically a monument but the on-site exhibits count. 9) Thang Long Imperial Citadel, $1.30, UNESCO site with active dig. 10) B-52 Museum on Doi Can, free, oddly moving.
What to skip
The Vietnam Revolution Museum has merged into the History Museum — don’t hunt for it separately. The Air Force Museum out on Truong Chinh is niche unless you love MiGs. And the Museum of Hanoi (the pyramid building on Pham Hung) looks stunning but the interior is thin — save it for a rainy Tuesday if at all.
