Why Hoan Kiem
Hoan Kiem district contains the Old Quarter (the medieval 36-guild grid, active since the 13th century), the French Quarter (villas from 1888 onward), Hoan Kiem Lake with the 18th-century Ngoc Son Temple, and the Opera House. Every major sight except Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum sits inside a 20-minute walk. Base here and you skip Grab bills entirely. Budget beds from $12, mid-range $50-90, top-end $250+ at the Metropole.
The streets that still make what they’re named for
Hang Bac still sells silver, Hang Ma still sells paper offerings, Hang Thiec is tinsmiths, Lan Ong is traditional medicine, Hang Gai has silk. Walk them clockwise from Dong Xuan market (built 1889, still Hanoi's biggest) south to Ma May's preserved 1890s merchant house at number 87, $1 entry — the single best 30-minute stop for understanding how Hanoiites lived before the French arrived.
What to skip in Hoan Kiem
The Friday-Sunday night market on Hang Dao is a tourist crush selling the same T-shirts as Bangkok — walk it once for the scene, don’t shop. Restaurants directly on the lake charge double for worse pho. And the "train street" cafes on Phung Hung are photogenic but were officially shut in 2023-24; access now depends on which cafe pays whom, and it's not a great experience.
