Tay Ho (West Lake): the expat neighbourhood, explained

Hanoi's most livable district — 17 km of lakefront, 2 major pagodas, and the best flat whites in Vietnam, 3 km north of the Old Quarter.

Why stay in Tay Ho

Tay Ho wraps West Lake, Hanoi's largest at 500 hectares. It's where diplomats, NGO staff and long-term expats live, which means: quieter streets, more trees, western groceries at L's Place, boutique hotels at $60-120, and the best bakery scene in the city. Trade-off: you’re a $2-3 Grab from Old Quarter sights. Ideal for a second visit, families, longer stays, or anyone who found the Old Quarter too intense on night one.

The historical layer

Don’t skip Tran Quoc Pagoda on the causeway — founded 541 AD, the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, 11-storey lotus stupa. Next door, Quan Thanh Temple (1010, rebuilt many times) with its 4-metre bronze statue of Tran Vu cast in 1677. The 1930s French Water Palace on Thanh Nien road divides West Lake from Truc Bach — historically the sewage outflow, now a jogging strip. Cycle the full 17 km loop in 2 hours, $3 rental.

Where to eat and drink

Xuan Dieu is the main strip: Maison de Tet Decor for brunch ($8-12), Pizza 4P's for the transplanted-Osaka pizza ($10), Rose Kitchen for banh xeo ($3.50). Coffee: The Hanoi Social Club, Kafeville, Cuppa Coffee — all $2.50-3.50. For sundown, Sunset Bar at the InterContinental hangs over the lake, cocktails $9. Skip the lake-edge seafood joints on Nghi Tam; overpriced and inconsistent.

Questions, answered
